The primary aim of examining biopsies and resected specimens is to supply clinicians with essential diagnostic and prognostic information enabling the best clinical management of the individual patient. The handling of specimens includes formalin fixation, taking gross photographs, cutting, paraffin embedding, sectioning, and staining routinely with hematoxylin and eosin. The best clinical pathology service can only be obtained when there is close cooperation and understanding between the pathologists and the laboratory staff on the one hand and clinicians and co-medical staff on the other.
