The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) has developed the flow test as a simple viscosity measurement technique for thickened liquids and proposed viscosity standard values for thickened liquids and thickened barium liquids. The Japanese Society of Dysphagia Rehabilitation has proposed viscosity standard values for thickened liquids using the flow test, but its application to thickened barium liquids has not been examined. Additionally, the syringe recommended by IDDSI, the BD-Slip, is not available in Japan. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the feasibility of measuring the viscosity of thickened barium liquids using the “Terumo Syringe,” which is available in Japan. The reproducibility of the flow test was also examined. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient for the syringe method using the Terumo Syringe was 0.99 (95% Confidence Interval:0.99-1.00). Furthermore, a simple linear regression analysis between the Terumo Syringe and BD-Slip showed a coefficient of determination of 0.99, with the regression equation being y = 1.0392x - 0.4039. These results suggest that the BD-Slip for the flow test for measuring the viscosity of thickened barium liquids can be substituted with the Terumo Syringe. However, it is important to note that the physical properties of barium may affect the measurement, potentially resulting in lower viscosity values compared to those for standard thickened liquids.
