The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hyoid/laryngeal peak velocity on patients with swallowing disorders. Videofluoroscopic study of swallowing (VFSS) was used to classify 28 patients with dysphagia into three groups:(1) without penetration (n=11), (2) with penetration・without aspiration (n=11) and (3) with aspiration (n=6) based on the penetration-aspiration scale (PA scale). Hyoid/laryngeal peak velocities were analyzed while swallowing 5 ml thin-liquid boluses using ImageJ software. We also evaluated hyoid/laryngeal mean velocity, duration of hyoid/laryngeal elevation, maximum hyoid/laryngeal distance, and the anterior and superior hyoid/laryngeal distance. The increase in laryngeal peak velocity significantly correlated with a decrease in the PA scale (r=−0.55, p=0.002). However, hyoid peak velocity had no significant correlation with PA scale (r=−0.35, p=0.068). This indicates that hyoid/laryngeal peak velocity might be an important factor associated with the severity of dysphagia.
