Purpose: We identify executive functioning factors that affect the mental health of nursing students.

Methods: A self-administered questionnaire on mental health and executive function was administered to 184 nursing students. A single regression analysis was conducted using the total mental health score(GHQ12), depressive tendency factor score, and social activity disorder factor score as dependent variables, and the total executive function(BRIEF-A) as an independent variable. Multiple regression analysis was also conducted using the two indices of executive function(Behavioral Regulation and Metacognition) and nine subfactors(Inhibit, Shift, Emotional Control, Self-Monitor, Initiate, Working Memory, Plan/Organize, Task Monitor, and Organizing Materials) as independent variables.

Results: Executive function significantly affected mental health. The Behavioral Regulation Index influenced overall mental health, and among the nine sub-factors, "Emotional Control" and "Task Monitor" were especially influential.

Conclusions: Enhancing their "Emotional Control" and "Task Monitor" abilities is essential to improving the mental health status of nursing students.
