Objective: This study explored the factors associated with psychiatric nurses' self-assessment of their nursing competence.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to 392 ward nurses employed at seven psychiatric hospitals operated by the National Hospital Organization. Multiple regression analysis was conducted, considering psychiatric nurses' self-assessment of their nursing competence as the dependent variable.

Results: Data obtained from 168 participants were analyzed(valid response rate: 42.9%). Multiple regression analysis indicated that participants' self-assessment of their nursing competence was associated with psychological empowerment, recovery orientation, years of psychiatric experience, and the number of times they participated in out-of-hospital training.

Conclusion: To increase psychiatric nurses' self-assessment of their nursing competence, it is important that they feel in control of their work by recognizing the meaning of their nursing practice, confidence in their competence, and the right to self-determination in their work. Additionally, it is important to improve attitudes toward supporting patients' personal recovery.
