Necrotizing soft tissue infections with remarkable effects and conserving function of walking by hyperbaric oxygen therapy

A 39-year-old man was transported to our hospital with his lower left leg pain. Rashness and swelling of the lower left leg were seen, and computed tomography scan revealed broad abscess with edema and gas formation. Therefore, he was diagnosed with necrotizing soft tissue infection. Debridement of the necrotic tissue was performed immediately, and wide-spectrum antibiotic therapy was started. Infection was stopped and wound was closed, with three weeks of antibiotic therapy, two sessions of debridement, and 20 cycles of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), thereby he could be prevented from amputation of his leg. HBOT must not replace the combination of early aggressive debridement and antibiotic therapy, but rather be considered as an important adjuvant therapy.
