食道癌に対する放射線治療は，従来切除不能や手術不能の患者に対して適用されていたが，1990年代以降は切除可能な食道癌に対する非手術的治療戦略として，化学放射線療法が盛んに研究開発されてきた。

Chemoradiotherpay for esophageal cancer has been developed as one of the standard or adjuvant treatments based on clinical trials, while the target volume delineation for primary lesion and regional lymph nodes has been defined in trial protocols. From this background, the contouring atlas and mapping images for delineation are adopted in Japanese treatment and planning guidelines. In this paper, the target volume definitions in clinical trials and the current view of regional lymph node contouring will be explained.
