日本災害看護学会へのお悔やみ、そして称賛と期待

A Message of Condolence, Admiration and Hope for the Japanese Society of Disaster Nursing

　昨年末JSDNから巻頭言の依頼を頂き、とても嬉しく思いました。期限であった2月に原稿を提出していたら、3月11日におきた破壊的な地震と津波に触れることはなかったでしょう。思わぬ偶然です。私が今書く巻頭言は、皆さんの国を襲ったこの度の未曾有の災害ゆえの内容となります。

　今回の災害の映像は、時に恐ろしい破壊力をもたらす、母なる自然のパワーを私たちに思いしらせました。日本が「環太平洋火山帯」に位置していること、そして日本でよく地震が発生することは周知されています。私は、神戸を二度訪れたことから、日本が地震に対し、ヘルスケア計画を含め、対策と準備を十分に重ねている国だということも知っています。

I was very pleased to be asked last December to write a foreword to this edition of the JSDN. Had I submitted it on time in February, this would have been before the devastating earthquake and Tsunami on March 11th. This is perhaps serendipity. The note I write now is as a consequence to the scale of the devastating disaster which has hit your country.

The images from this disaster remind us of the awesome and sometimes terrifying, power of Mother Nature. We are all aware that with its position on the edge of the "Pacific Ring of Fire", Japan is a country accustomed to seismic activity. From my two visits to Kobe, I am aware that Japan is country which has invested heavily in earthquake preparedness and planning, including health care planning.
