  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We have been examining the most effective and efficient usage of gowns worn for the purpose of prevention of bacterial infection. Here we examined the degree of bacterial contamination on gowns worn during the care of patients infected with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and the effect of ultraviolet irradiation for the sterilization of gowns. An average of about 16 colonies of bacteria per plate (30cm2) were detected on the outer surfaces of 20 unirradiated gowns. MRSA was detected on one unirradiated gown. The average number of colonies of bacteria detected on the inner surfaces of the unirradiated gowns was one. MRSA Was not detected at this site. Two used gowns were placed in a locker equipped with ultraviolet lamps, and irradiated The average number of colonies detected on the outer surfaces of the gowns irradiated for five minutes was about one, and dropped to 0.5 colonies with 15 minutes irradiation. MRSA was not detected from any gown irradiated with ultraviolet. Similar results were obtained in in vitro experiments. Thus, it became clear that ultraviolet irradiation on gowns hung in a locker was effective for the sterilization of bacteria contaminated on the outer surfaces of gowns.
