THE PATHOLOGY OF OTITIS MEDIA
Professor Torii of Niigata University Medical School analysed otitis media, regar dless of their acuteness or chronici y, and divided them into two distinct types, namely，tympanic cavity and attic types．The former，he stated as benign and quite amenable to conservative treatments but the latter as virulent, more often requiring surgical interference for their cure than as not．
Saltor, of the same faculty, made studies over a considerable number of patients and found that, the attic type of otitis media in which infections were definitely demarcated within the bounds of the attic and the ant um were present in no more than 1/3 of the total number of cases；whereas, in the remaining 2/3 the infection had spread throughout entire mastoid process and about one third of these had shown inflammatory changes that were highly advanced in bone cell destructions and exposures of the dural lining of the brain．
