はじめに

　近年，ミオパチーに関する研究はますます盛んとなり，その病因，病態生理に関する研究の進展には著しいものがあり，形態学的，生化学的，電気生理学的，さらには分子遺伝学的診断法の発達とともに，ミオパチーの診断技術も日進月歩の向上を遂げている。

　すべての疾患においても同様であるが，ミオパチーの研究の発展にも，まずbase line data，すなわち頻度，年齢分布，性比，遺伝的背景，臨床的特徴にわたる諸因子が明らかにされねばならない。しかも，かかる基礎的データは疫学的研究によってのみ与えられるものである。しかしながら，ミオパチーの疫学的研究に関しては，諸外国をはじめ本邦でも意外に少なく，その実態は十分明らかにされていないのが現状である。本稿では，我が国における各種ミオパチーの疫学調査の結果を概観するとともに，筆者らの行なった熊本県における各種ミオパチーの疫学調査の結果を紹介し，本邦におけるミオパチーの実態について論述する。

Epidemiological study of myopathy in Japan was very limited. The relative frequency and prevalence ratio of the various myopathies were reported only by the Katsuki group in Fukuoka city (1959), Otsuka in Niigata city (1960), Araki in Wakayama city (1961) and the Araki group in Kumamoto city and Kumamoto prefecture (1983). The nationwide survey of various myopathies in Japan was performed by the Katsuki group in 1964. The epidemiology of myopathies in Japan was reviewed.

In recent years, the understanding of pathophysiology and the clinical diagnosis of myopathies have been progressed due to development of biochemical, immunohistochemical and electrophysiological techniques. The relative frequency and the incidence of myopathy might be changed in the future. The further nationwide or certain district survey of various myopathies is required.
