Summary

 About 50 "nominally different" acidic proteins, including 20 "brain-specific" proteins, have been identified so far in the nervous tissue. Among these, 16 proteins are characterized to be a calcium binding protein.

 Survey of calcium binding proteins in the animal tissues, on the other hand, have revealed that they are classified into the following groups based on the residues responsible for calcium coordination, i.e. the proteins containing: parvalbumin-like EF hand calcium binding loop (group I), γ-carboxy glutamic acid (Gla) (group II), phosphorylated serine or threonine (group III).
