　松果体についてはこれまで多くの研究がなされてきた。とくに1950年代の後半からその生化学的研究は急速に進展し単行本^6,9,10）も数冊出版されるほど，多くの人びとの興味を集めてきた。この小論では松果体について生化学的観点から，これまでの研究を概観し，どの点にその特異性が認められるのか，松果体実質細胞（pinealocyte）が神経細胞（neuron）と似ている点，異なる点は何なのか，いわゆるparaneuronの概念にはたして適合するのか―などについて考えてみたい。

Abstract

We reviewed the recent biochemical studies ofthe pineal organ, mainly on 1) electrophoretic and immunological patterns of pineal proteins, 2) biosynthesis and degradation of melatonin and serotonin in the pineal gland, 3) function of the pineal gland and circadian rhythms, and 4) antigonadotropic factor in the pineal gland. From these studies, we concluded that the pinealocyte may be classified to the paraneurone, according to the paraneurone concept introduced by Fujita and his collaborators.
