Abstract

Melanin-producing cells in the skin known as melanocytes appear in the basal layer of the epidermis, hair bulb and dermis. They are derived from neural crest and structurally resemble the cells of the retinal pigment epithelium developed from the brain tissue. Both of the cutaneous and retinal pigment cells may be classified in paraneurons and produce granules named premelanosomes which grow into melano-somes. The detailed mechanism of formation of premelanosomes as well as the production of tyrosinase which is an important enzyme for melanogenesis is discussed.
