　ポリグルタミン病として知られている9疾患のうち，その生理的機能が明らかとなっている責任遺伝子は，球脊髄性筋萎縮症のアンドロゲン受容体と脊髄小脳変性症6型（SCA6）のP／QタイプCaチャネル（CACNAIA），およびSCA17のTATA-binding proteinだけである。しかし病態の包括的理解と治療法の確立には，生理的機能の解明が不可欠の要素であり，他6疾患の責任遺伝子についても，その生理的機能は徐々に明らかにされ始めてきている。

The physiological functions of the gene products of causative genes for polyglutamine diseases remain to be determined, except for the androgen receptor (spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy), the αlA voltage-depended calcium channel (spinocerebellar ataxia type 6) and TATA-binding protein (spinocerebellar ataxia type 17). Elucidation of physiological functions of the gene products are essential not only to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of the diseases but also to develop new therapeutic approaches for these polyglutamine diseases.
