はじめに

　近年の画像技術の進歩は目覚ましく，現在では，画像解析を用いて，ヒトの脳の形態や機能をin vivoで評価することが可能になっている。そして，画像解析を応用した精神分裂病（分裂病）の病態解析も進みつつある。今回は，MRI（magnetic resonance imaging）を用いた分裂病の脳形態の研究と，PET（positron emissiontomography）を用いた神経伝達機能の研究について，われわれの研究結果を中心に，最近の研究動向についても紹介する。

There have been several lines of MRI studies reporting brain structural changes in schizophrenia. The hypothesis that schizophrenia is a disorder caused by early and static damage has been supported by MRI studies which demonstrated structural abnormalities at the onset of schizophrenia and failed to find any progressive structural changes. However, we conducted a 10-year longitudinal MRI morphometrical study and found progressive ventricular enlargements in patients with schizophrenia but not in controls.
