  • Look Inside

Recent development of appropriate positron emitting radioligands has made it possible to investigate the alterations of neurotransmitter systems associated with various basal ganglia disorders in vivo. To date, the dopaminergic system has been the most extensively investigated. The functional integrity of nigrostriatal dopaminergic terminals may be studied with [18F] 6-fluoro-L-dopa ([18F] dopa), and striatal dopamine receptor density with suitable PET ligands, such as [11C] raclopride and [11C] SCH23390.
