はじめに

　前頭葉は，大脳皮質のうち中心溝より前方を占める領域である。霊長類では良く発達し，とくに人間では大脳皮質全体の3分の1以上を占める。前頭葉は行動や運動を起こす脳の部位と言われているが，一体前頭葉のどの領域がどのように行動や運動の発現にかかわっているのだろうか。本稿では，前頭葉性行為障害の生理学的背景として，前頭葉の各領野のうち，行動や運動の発現に密接に関係のある一次運動野，高次運動野（補足運動野，運動前野など），および前頭前野の機能について，サルを用いた実験の結果を中心に述べる。

The frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex includes the primary motor cortex at its caudal end, and the prefrontal cortex at its rostral end. In between these two areas lies a number of secondary or higher-order motor areas plus the frontal eye field. The concept of the secondary motor areas in the frontal cortex has changed greatly, as a result of increasing novel knowledge on these areas.
