Intracerebral inoculation of susceptible mice with Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) induces a demyelinating disease that is similar to human multiple sclerosis. Identification of pathogenic epitopes is very important in elucidating the pathogenesis of this immune-mediated disease. In order to analyze the viral epitopes, we have generated recombinant lgt11 clones expressing almost all capsid areas of TMEV. Antibodies from virus infected mice recognized six predominant areas, ranging from 13-26 amino acid residues.
