Analysis of the functional architecture of the hippocampus with an optical method

はじめに

　個々の神経細胞レベルで行われる情報処理メカニズムは電気生理学，生化学，さらに最近では遺伝子工学の先端技術を駆使して次々に明らかにされつつある。記憶・学習の細胞レベルのモデル系として注目される海馬シナプス可塑性の研究は，その代表例といえよう。しかし，高次神経系の働きを明らかにするためには，そのような細胞レベルの研究とともに，種々の神経細胞が一体となって動作し，遂行される情報処理のメカニズムの解明が重要である。

　前者は素子（要素）レベルの研究，後者はシステムレベルの研究である。両者は脳機能の理解の取組みの中で本来，不可分なはずである。しかし，現状では必ずしも両者が良く融合しているとは思われない。たとえば海馬のLTPがシステムの中で実際にどう作用しているかは明らかでない。

To date, our understanding of the eleborate mechanisms that govern the information processing of neural tissue or the brain is based mainly on data obtained from single-electrode recordings in vivo or in vitro. The refinement of electrophysiological techniques has advanced our knowledge about the processes involved in neural information processing, but clearly, we are still far away from a complete and coherent understanding of these brain functions.
