It has been suggested that the hippocampal system is involved in the formation of human episodic memory based on multiply associative coding. Rat hippocampal neurons respond to patterns or relations of multiple stimuli (Sharp et al., 1990). Lesion studies suggest that the hippocampal formation is crucial in learning associative relations among multiple cues or factors such as configural association (Sutherland and McDonald, 1990), relational representation (Eichenbaum et al., 1990), snapshot memory (Gaffan and Harrison, 1989), and object-place association (Parkinson et al., 1988).
