  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

There is clear difference between neurons situated before and after the primary visual cortex(V1)with regard to the way color information is represented. In the retina and the lateral geniculate nucleus, color is represented by the activities of two kinds of neurons, namely, red-green and blue-yellow color opponent neurons. In the cortex, color is represented by neurons tuned to various hues. This transformation is in part achieved by non-linear transformation of cone signals which results in a sharp color tuning. There are double-opponent neurons in V1 that can detect color contrast. An important property of cortical neuron is the formation of orientation selectivity. With regard to the relation between color and shape information, some neurons in V1 have both color and orientation selectivities, thus are able to carry both color and shape information. In this article, I will briefly describe the recent advancement of the study in the cortical color processing.
