緒言
翼状片は，眼科臨床医が日常屡々遭遇する疾患であるが，其の原因に関しては未だ解明されていない。文献的には，栄養障害説（Susruta），Lymphogranuloma説（Morax），外部刺激に対する角膜の防禦反応説（Doherty），Choline欠乏説（Beard and Dimitry），塵埃，或いは光線で刺激されていた眼に細菌によつて慢性炎症が起るとの説（Michel Gerundo）等が挙げられているが，1954年，Kamelは，（1） neoplastictheory，（2）degenerative theory，（3）in-flammatory theoryの3つの説をとりあげ，病理組織学的所見を加えて，各々の説を批判し，慢性炎症説を支持する興味ある報告を行つた。彼は，結膜に限局性に発生したChronic irritativeexposure conjunctivitisが角膜に波及し，chronic keratoconjunctivitisとなり，粘膜下の放射状に走る線維組織帯の形成，その収縮により翼状片が形成されると述べている。Sugarは翼状片は瞼裂斑より発展したものであるとの意見を述べ，Pinkertonも，翼状片は環境の原因によつて瞼裂斑が慢性炎症を起したものに他ならないといつている。
翼状片が最も医師，患者を悩ますことは，手術後屡々再発を繰返すことにある。
The β-radiation therapy was administered on pterygium by means of Lederman's oph-thalmological Sr-90 applicator, and the following results were obtained.
1) When β-radiation alone is used for treatment of pterygium, the therapeutic doses and duration of radiation exceed the safety level and the danger of radiation damage emerges. Even if cure is achieved, the cosmetic result is poor due to remaining scar so-called "ptery-gium ghost".
