I．緒言

　老人白内障の薬物療法については，古来幾多の薬剤が試みられて来たが，それらの多くは明確な理論的根拠を欠くか，或いは効果が不確実なため，時と共に顧られなくなっている。

　現在我が国では，荻野の広汎な白内障の成因に関する研究から生れたカタリン，及び作用機序の類似したファコリンが広く使用されているが，その効果には限度があり，理想的で確実な薬剤とは言えない。

At present Catalin and Phacolin are widely used as drugs for treatment of senile cataractin Japan, but as their effects are limited, they can not be called ideal and reliable drugs.

The author focused attention on the marked decrease of Vitamin C and Glutathione con-tent which are the most important biochemi-cal changes in lenses with findings of cata-ract, and considered them to be related with the development of cataract. He administered α-Mercaptopropionyl-glycine (commercial tra-de name Thiola) to 59 eyes of 31 cases diag-nosed as senile cataract at Department of Ophthalmology, Hiroshima University.
