要旨●頭頸部を含む扁平上皮領域における早期癌の診断は，NBIの開発によって飛躍的に向上した．NBI観察時に拾い上げの指標となる淡い発赤領域の要因である，拡張したIPCLのほかに，血管周囲の上皮の色調変化に焦点をあて，その成因について検討・考察した．NBI陽性となる原理であるHbあるいは類似の成分の存在を疑って検討を行い，癌細胞内のHb含有および産生能の可能性について概説する．

　Early diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region has drastically improved by the introduction of NBI（narrow band imaging）technology. Detecting slightly brown-colored area with NBI is the first step in detecting early changes in carcinomas. We previously investigated the relevant cause of this color change and possibility of existence of hemoglobin or similar substances within the cancer cells. Here we describe the results of the current study with possible causes of browning.
