During five years from 2008 to 2012, a total of 17,087,111 digestive endoscopic examinations were performed. The number of the digestive endoscopy-related accidents was 12,548 (0.073%). The incidence of accidents related observational endoscopy was 0.014%, while that for therapeutic endoscopy was 0.67%, which was approximately 50 times as high as that of observational endoscopy. A total of 220 digestive endoscopy-related death cases were reported. Of them, 165 were older than 70 years and consisted of approximately three-quarters of death cases.
