Calcium imaging that detects the fluorescence by the change of calcium concentration in neuron is a method of monitoring neuronal activity. This method allows us to monitor the activities of labeled neurons by using transgenic mice or viral vectors. By using microscope technology, we can obtain the neural activities of dendrite spines and those of tens to hundreds of neurons at the same time. Here, we introduce a basic principle of calcium imaging and the researches for neuropsychiatric function and its dysfunction using calcium imaging.
