Seishu Hanaoka, a pioneering Japanese anesthesiologist, trained numerous apprentices throughout his carrier. Although his early friendships significantly influenced both his medical training and his personal development, little is known about these relationships. To explore this aspect of his life, we analyzed the Chinese poems that he wrote and sent to friends. We also investigated whether Seishu and these peers were enrolled in any medical school in Kyoto during that period. Notably, Seishu Hanaoka’s name does not appear in the student lists of any medical institution, including Yoshimasu School. However, Shutei Nakagawa and Keibun Takemoto are listed as students at both the Yoshimasu School and the Shameiroku, i.e., the student registry at Zuio Unagami’s school. Based on references in the Chinese poetry, it appears that Seishu arrived in Kyoto in the spring of 1782 and resided in Ukyo(the west side of Kyoto).
