Biomaterials are materials used in contact with living organisms or biological components. This paper outlines the history, current research trends, and future prospects of polymeric biomaterials. Research on polymeric biomaterials can be broadly classified into two categories:“inert” materials that inhibit protein adsorption and exhibit antithrombotic properties, and “active” materials that actively adsorb proteins of extracellular matrices and exhibit cell adhesion properties. In addition, materials that can be switched between “inert” and “active” have been developed. The auther believes that these materials will have many active roles in clinical practice and in basic medical research;however, engineers are often unable to find a place for their lovely children to play an active role. There are some materials that have already been clinically applied, but more than 100 times as many materials are still hiding in the literature. I hope that this paper will be a catalyst for more biomaterials to reach clinical practice.
