The IASP defines pain “An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage”. Needless to say, pain is extremely unpleasant and should be cured. As stated in the notes to the definition, “Through their life experiences, individuals learn the concept of pain”. Therefore, even if the same pain stimulus is received by the brain, the degree of expression of pain varies depending on the learning process of each individual’s experience. Those who tend not to express pain so much by their learning may lose the opportunity for treatment. Furthermore, the end of the notes states, “Verbal description is only one of several behaviors to express pain;inability to communicate does not negate the possibility that a human or a nonhuman animal experiences pain”. In fact, it takes experience and sense to infer the pain of someone who does not verbalize it, and this can lead to variations among physicians in charge. We initiated this project with the idea of developing a device that can visualize pain without saying it using AI, with the aim of providing an equal opportunity to treat the most uncomfortable sensation of pain.
