Anesthesia is an important factor in the safe and secure conduct of surgery, and greatly affects the success or failure of surgery. Therefore, anesthesiologists should control the amount of anesthesia during surgery to maintain the effect of anesthesia on the patient;however, the control of the anesthesia dose relies heavily on the anesthesiologist’s experience and skill. Recently, a robotic anesthesia system that automatically controls the amount of anesthesia during general anesthesia has been proposed and clinical research has started. This system uses a robot to control the drug administration automatically by monitoring biometric information such as the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, and electroencephalogram.

Our group is developing a wearable pulse wave meter using organic electronics. The wearable pulse wave meter is fabricated on a 10 μm thick film substrate. Due to the thickness of the device, we can attach the device to various parts of the body to measure pulse waves and blood oxygen levels. It is hoped that this technology may be used to measure the intensity distribution of pulse wave and blood oxygen concentration, thereby enabling visualization of the effects of local anesthesia.
