  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The current situation and concept of psychosocial support in the treatment of cleft lip and palate, based on experience at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Tohoku University Hospital, are presented. From a clinical, developmental, preventive, and visible-difference perspective, it is important for the treatment team, the affected child, and the child's family members and community to work together to help the child develop confidence in his or her own identity. Although the presence of a psychologist on a cleft lip and palate treatment team is becoming a global standard, achieving this remains a challenge in Japan. In addition to alternative support from medical staff on these teams, referrals to and consultations with psychologists are necessary.
