The two main principles of reducing medical radiation exposure, not just for children, are “optimization” and “justification.” Optimization means performing examinations at a dose appropriate to the patientʼs body size. Small children do not need the same dose as larger adults. Justification means performing truly necessary examinations and those that make sense, while not performing those that are not necessary. This article explains the latest information on five key points to keep in mind when optimizing radiation exposure doses for children:the ALARA principle, diagnostic reference levels(DRLs), Japanʼs DRLs 2025, diagnostic imaging guidelines, and the abolition of gonadal protection.
