Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) is well known to contribute to the reduction of postoperative complications, early recovery, hospital stay, and cost reduction. We developed our unique clinical pathway based on ERAS since May 2013. Five hundred twenty-nine patients who underwent thoracoscopic surgery were eligible. Early oral feeding is considered as one of the key roles at ERAS, but more than 70% of patient were not able to eat more than half on operative evening. Our medical team discussed how to promote early food intake. We conceived a wonderful idea peculiar to the cancer specific hospital, and paid attention to providing ice cream, named “Kanoko food”, which is usually served for ameliorating anorexia suffering from chemotherapy. We tried to introduce ice cream as dessert immediately 2 hours after operation. No significant improvement was shown in food intake; however, 93.2% patients challenged to eat ice cream, and 63.9% could more than half as a result of ingenuity. Additionally, ice cream was significantly not affected by the exacerbating factors against early oral feeding (female and non-smoker). Our study suggests that immediate ice cream ingestion as a dessert might be safe and useful clinical style after thoracoscopic surgery.
