Purposes: People's attitudes towards alcoholics' seeking support from specialists and factors determining these attitudes were investigated from the perspective of gender differences.

Methods: An Internet monitor survey was conducted. The sample (N=800) consisted of a gender ratio of 1:1 and an age range of 20-50 years. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted on the following determinant factors: five items extracted from “seriousness and meaning of problems” and two items extracted from “validity of seeking support.”

Results: Eight-hundred-thirty-seven questionnaires were collected. Results indicated that people's attitudes towards alcoholics' seeking support from specialists were generally affirmative. Moreover, the consciousness of determinant factors was high except for “understanding of recovery.” Furthermore, the scores of women were higher than that of men for all of items. Correlations between determinant factors and attitudes indicated that “considerably heavy drinking” and “prognosis with no special support” were not significantly correlated with men's attitudes, whereas “understanding of recovery” was not significantly correlated with women's attitudes.

Conclusion: Improving people's understanding of abstinence is important. Moreover, improving understanding of the significance of support for “heavy drinking” is especially, important in men.
