Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the factors related to stumbling easily in the old old, considering the affect confounded by age. The object variable was whether the old old stumble easily or not, and the explanatory variables were anthropometric, observation of walking position, ADL index, and lifestyle habits. They examined the relationship between them.

The results of the Cochran-Armitage test showed that proportion of stumbling easily increased significantly(p<0.05)with the advance of age. After adjusting the ages by using the Mantel Haenszel test, the factor which indicated a significant relationship with stumbling easily was the shoulder movement(odds ratio: 3.37, 95% confidence interval: 1.28-8.85), shuffle one's feet(odds ratio: 2.25, 95% confidence interval: 1.08-4.68)and hand and elbow movement(odds ratio: 2.01, 95% confidence interval: 1.04-3.92). However, they used covariant analysis for adjusting ages in the measured value. There was no significant relationship with stumbling easily. The possibility was suggested that the old old stumble easily because the function of the upper limbs, such as shoulders or elbows, decreases and shuffle.
