Purpose: This study investigated the factors influencing the contact methods of parents of infants in the event of a disaster.

Methods: With the cooperation of City A, we targeted parents affiliated with all childcare facilities in the city. We conducted an anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey.

Results: Factors influencing parents' response in the event of a disaster include “parents' age” (OR, 1.03 95% Cl, 1.01-1. 06); “ evacuation experience” (OR, 3.08 95% Cl, 1.31-7.21); “being able to imagine life in an evacuation center” (OR, 1.57 95% Cl, 1.02-2.42); “preparation of emergency supplies to be used in the event of a disaster” (OR, 1.78 95% Cl, 1.32-2.41); “absence of parents or relatives in the neighborhood” (OR, 1.57 95% Cl, 1.17-2.10); “being familiar with the shelter location” (OR, 3.11 95% Cl, 2.18-4.43); and “concern for the child's safety” (OR, 1.35 95% Cl, 1.02-1.77).

Conclusions: Family discussions about how to contact each other in the event of a disaster were related to members' evacuation experience, preparation of emergency supplies to be used in the event of a disaster, being familiar with the shelter location, concern for the child's safety, and absence of parents or relatives in the neighborhood.
