Before the Olympic and Paralympic Games start, disaster prevention for mass gatherings is required. However, due to limited studies on mass gathering events, it is becoming a challenge to identify events that may generate casualties and cause health hazards.

The purpose of this study was to find the status of mass gathering events that generated casualties and caused health hazards in Japan. To extract events comprehensively, a literature review was conducted using related literature and books. Based on the data obtained, we summarized an outline of the events, the characteristics shown by mass gathering event assessment and the details of the health hazards that occurred.

As a result, 226 events were extracted. Since the 1990s, the number of events held has increased, and many of the events were held outdoors at night and lasted shorter than 24 hours. The most common health hazards found were injuries following food poisoning. Moreover, health hazards even occurred in a group of approximately 20 people, and it was suggested that it is necessary to prepare for the occurrence of a mass casualty incident even at small events.
