Objective: The aim of this study is to review the medical relief activities employed on board a cruise ship that attracted social attention in the early stages of COVID-19 in Japan. By reviewing this case, this study seeks to clarify the challenges and future roles of DMAT personnel.
Methods: The experiences and thoughts of the DMAT team members (a doctor, a nurse, and an operation coordinator-including the author), while performing their activities during the event, are summarized.
Results: This rescue operation was thoroughly prepared for within a short period of time, and orientation took place both before and after arrival on the ship. The onboard DMAT training was different from the DMAT training for natural disasters, and we could fulfill our role as DMAT, even though we encountered some challenges.
Conclusion: It is necessary to set up guidelines and conduct further training to be able to respond to unknown infectious diseases such as COVID-19.
