The committee on terminology of the Japan Nursing Diagnosis Society decided there is an immediate need to develop a nursing curriculum model in Japan that incorporates nursing diagnoses. The decision was based on the results of a survey conducted by the committee on the incorporation of nursing diagnoses into the basic nursing curriculum. We reviewed the literature from the United States, which has incorporated nursing diagnoses into the curriculum from a much earlier date. In the United States, the movement toward incorporating nursing diagnoses into the basic curriculum started in the 1980s. The movement took hold in the 1990s. This early movement has continued and now focuses on measuring the effects of incorporating nursing diagnoses. We discussed the following three examples of the actual incorporation of nursing diagnoses into the basic curriculum; a) assessment of the educational program at Core College, b) development of curricula that are based on the NANDA category system by Frisch, et al., and c) the partial revision of the curriculum for the third year nursing students at the Nursing Division of Laurel University.
