  • Abstract

 I would like to thank you for having invited me to give this lecture entitled ‘Diabetes care in England from the Nurse practitioner's viewpoint’. It was a great honor to be asked to share my thoughts with you.

 This paper summarises the presentation during which my aim was to provide insight into the following topic areas;

・The structure and models of how diabetes care is provided in hospital and community settings.

・Approaches to clinical management including the screening and prevention of diabetes complications.

・The importance of structured education for people with diabetes and share examples of national education programmes for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

・Understanding ‘person centred care’ and ‘empowerment’ and how we integrate this into our clinical practice to work in a collaborative way.

・Promoting and supporting behaviour change to enable people with diabetes to identify and implement desired health behaviour changes to support self-management.

・Explore how nurses develop their knowledge skills and competency to deliver the care required
