The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of pain and feelings associated with the self-measurement of blood glucose in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and factors affecting their changes. The subjects were 44 children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. A semi-structural interview survey was performed to evaluate pain and feelings associated with the self-management of blood glucose. In addition, the degrees of“pain,”“troublesome,”and“unwilling”were assessed by self-report using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The interviews revealed that the children felt pain at onset but do not feel pain at present but rather feel “troublesome”and“unwilling.”Analysis using VAS showed a significant decrease in the degree of pain from onset to the time of the survey and future [F(2,82) = 65.00, p < 0.05] but no changes in the degree of “troublesome”or“unwilling.”Significant differences were observed in the degree of“pain,”“troublesome,”and“unwilling”according to sex, child's age, and the age at onset (p < 0.05). Appropriate guidance to reduce“pain”may be important at onset, and continuous support to reduce “troublesome”and“unwilling”may be necessary as support methods for the self-measurement of blood glucose.
