The purpose of this study was to compare the oxygen consumption measured by the Douglas Bag Method within conditions of quiet lying, quite chair sitting and three kinds of OT activities in chair sitting (singing, physical exercises, playing catch) of the twelve hemiplegic elderly persons who had disabilities in self-walking.

The mean value of oxygen consumption of each item increased in the order of quiet lying, quiet chair sitting, singing, physical exercises and playing catch. Significant differences were recognized among the oxygen consumption of the five items except between physical exercises and playing catch. The oxygen consumption of each item compared with that of quiet sitting were 0. 85 times for quiet sitting, 1. 24 times for singing, 1. 66 times for physical exercises and 1. 79 times for playing catch. There were not significant differences, except in the case of physical exercises, between the result of twelve hemiplegic elderly persons and the result of fifteen able bodied elderly persons.

But in the group of low Barthel Index, the result showed a low ventilation volume and a low ratio of oxygen consumption and a high number of respiration. It was suggested that the responces for the oxygen consumption were different according to their ability for activities of daily living.
