Social skills training (SST) is not well understood as cognitive behavior therapy in Japan, as evidenced by the fact that the term is used even for very simple daily life guidance. This paper reviews SST coverage in academic journals and investigates SST as assessed by occupational therapists, based on the definitions of Meuser and Anzai et al. The direction of future studies is also investigated in the light of the progress of the last ten years.
While the name, concept and technique of SST used not to be well understood in related papers, they have become clearer over the past five years. This lack of understanding is thought to have been caused by the understanding of definitions of social skills other than SST. Most of the papers on SST have been published over the past five years, and the contents are moving from a preliminary stage to a stage of full-scale development. However, many issues were thought to remain for future studies.
