Abstract : The Iki rehabilitation and care volunteer group has performed supportive activities for children, adults and the elderly with disabilities for 27 years on the isolated island of Iki, Nagasaki Prefecture. The island, there has a high population of elderly people with very limited social resources and human power for community care and rehabilitation. The group's main activities include advising persons with disabilities for their independent living, educating health and social care professionals, and developing a network for linking these professionals. We have always worked with not only the caregivers themselves but also the persons with disabilities, their families and people living in the community because of the limited resources here. The elderly population of people over 65 years old will be approximately 40 percent in the near future. We administer educational and rehabilitation programs to assist people in the community in independent living, and we are encouraging the elderly to form a self help group to work together with the local government.
