The purpose of this study was to measure the time taken to reach the target value when tongue pressure was developed, to clarify the relationship with the utterance motor speech function, and to determine tongue pressure differences between males and females. The subjects were 25 young healthy adults (age 22.5±2.1 years). The maximum tongue pressure was measured using a tongue pressure measuring device (JMS, TPM-01), and the time taken to achieve the target tongue pressure was calculated based on the tongue pressure expression time. To evaluate the speech utterance function, we adopted the alternating motion rate of monosyllable, the speaking rate, and the articulation rate. A significant correlation was found between the time taken to reach 30% tongue pressure (T30%) and the speech utterance function. Male subjects took shorter time to reach 30% and 90% of maximum tongue pressure than female subjects. T30% seems to reflect the basic ability of the articulatory motor function, suggesting a future direction for studies of the treatment and evaluation of dysarthria.
