Robotics and Surgery in the 21st Century

　外科治療は，外科医の目と器用な手による処置で発展してきた．しかし，人間の目と手による限界を打破して21世紀の新しい外科治療環境を実現するには，手術支援ロボット，医用三次元画像，CG，コンピュータシミュレーションなどの技術が欠かせない．医用三次元画像は外科医に新しい目を提供し，手術支援ロボットなどの手術支援機器は外科医に新しい手を提供する．しかし，この種のロボットは，外科医がハサミやメスを持って行う処置動作を真似るものではない．外科医に提供する新しい目と手は，低侵襲・無侵襲外科，VRマイクロサージェリー，遠隔手術，胎児外科，ニューロインフォマティクス外科など，21世紀の新しい外科学を開拓，推進する．

Surgical operations have developed over the years due to the surgeon 's skillful hand and trained eyes. However, to realize a new surgical therapy in the 21st century, it is necessary to use various advanced technolo-gies ; surgical robots, three dimensional medical images, computer graphics, computer simulation technology and others. Three dimensional medical image for surgical operation provides surgeons with advanced vision. A surgical robot provides surgeons with an technologically advanced hand, but it does not a mimic the action of a surgeon using scissors or a scalpel.
