We studied the techniques, indications, and advantages of lung partial resction using miniature diameter instuments in respiratory surgery. Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was conducted in 30 patients using thoracoscopic instruments 2 mm in diameter. These patients consist of 18 with spontaneous pneumothorax, 7 with interstitinal preumonia, 3 with an indetermined pulmonary nodule and 2 with a metastatic tumor in the pe-ripheral lung field. In patients with spontaneous pneumothorax. there was no significant difference in operating time or blood loss between needlescopic surgery and conventional VATS.
