　21世紀の内視鏡下外科手術は，医学と工学のますますの発展と融合により，「患者に優しい医療」，「外科医，看護婦などすべての手術関係者に優しい医療」，さらに「医療経済や地球環境に優しい医療」を実現すると考える．その実現のために特に重要な技術は，立体的でかつ高画質を実現するための画像技術，安全かつ効率的処置を行うための超音波を初めとする各種エネルギー処置技術，マイクロマシン技術を含むロボティックサージェリー，さらに情報通信技術の進歩とインフラの整備による内視鏡機器のシステム化とネットワーク化に関する技術である．

In the 21st century, endoscopic surgery will continue to benefit from advances in and the fusion of medical science and engineering, resulting in improvements such as gentler procedures not only for patient, but also for surgeons, nurses and all other staff. To see this come to pass, a number of important technologies must be developed and refined.
