Bleeding from the gallbladder bed in laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis is often difficult to control. There are several hemostasis techniques for this bleeding, such as electrocoagulation with monopolar diathermy or bipolar handpiece, compression with gauze swab or absorbable hemostatic material, and argon beam coagulation. However, there is no definite method. We found a new technique named“Wet Gauze Coagulation Technique”. This technique is to coagulate the bleeding point with saline-wetted gauze held by monopolar dissector. This technique has an advantage that it is able to coagulate in a wide area without carbonization, so prompt and smooth hemostasis is obtained. In addition, it is cost-effective because of no extra equipment required. We recommend this technique for hemostasis in laparoscopic surgery.
